For the week 3 assignment, I have chosen the topic of Nurse Turnover. The facility I work at has experienced such a high turnover rate, that there have been times they were unable to open the facility. Since the pandemic hit, the facility cut costs by cutting staff reducing the team to unsafe numbers. This has resulted in the nurses taking on additional duties outside of nursing such as admission coordinating and discharge planning. This has not only led to nurses leaving, but nurses being uninterested in applying. Contributing factor to nursing burnout is health workloads and long hours, unsupportive work environments, and emotional strain (St. Catherine University, 2021). Although the nursing staff requested additional nursing support which has been declined, this proposal will propose bringing back the admissions coordinator position to relieve significant pressure on the nurses and allow them to more focus on nursing care.

For my Executive Summary assignment, I have decided on the topic of pressure ulcer prevention. I am a long-term care nurse and unfortunately come across many different pressure ulcers despite the preventative measures taken. Pressure ulcers are defined as injuries to the skin and underlying tissue, caused by prolonged pressure on the skin (NHS, 2020). The targeted audience will be long-term care facilities and staff members. There are many benefits to this topic not just for the patient but for the facility as well these benefits include reduction in costs, deaths, infections, and overall comfort of the patient (Sullivan & Schoelles, 2013). Pressure ulcer prevention is an important aspect of nursing care there are many interventions that should be done such as turning patients at least every 2 hours, regular skin checks to identify early signs of skin breakdown, low air loss air mattress, floating heals with PODUS boots or pillows, place pillows between knees, encourage a healthy diet with adequate amounts of protein, and cessation of smoking (NHS, 2020). Although many of these interventions are done by long-term care staff members, unfortunately, they are not 100% preventable due to the decrease in mobility and the thinning of the skin in elderly patients make it difficult to prevent these types of ulcers.
