Create a critical analysis of a movie that features perspectives relating to death, dying and bereavement.

The purpose of this paper is for you to create a critical analysis of a movie that features perspectives relating to death, dying and bereavement.  The term critical analysis means that you will be asked to answer certain questions about the cognitive, behavioral, or emotional perspectives in the production and to back up your answers with research and/or theory/approaches. Cognitive or thought perspectives are what the characters are thinking or talking about related to death, dying and bereavement. The behavioral perspective means the external or observable behaviors portrayed by the characters (i.e. preparations or interactions with the body, etc.).  The emotional perspective relates to feelings influencing behaviors or the interpretation of other’s feelings.  The papers receiving the highest grades will be the ones which show evidence of critical thought, extensive research, and sophisticated use of theory.

Papers should be 2-3 pages in length, Times New Roman 12 pt font, and double-spaced with 1″ margins on all sides.

You will select a movie from this list:

 Love Story

Philadelphia Story

Schindler’s List

Saving Private Ryan

The Hours

The Event

The Sea Inside

Million Dollar Baby

You Don’t Know Jack

Writing instructions

Your paper will have the following sections:

*Introduction:

Provides basic information about the movie and your paper (no more than one paragraph).  Include:

•             A brief introduction to the movie and why it is pertinent to the perspectives of death, dying and/or bereavement.?

•             What will your analysis be about (i.e., What is your main thesis or talking point(s))?

*Body:?

There are THREE main sections for this part—you must include all sections.

1)      Theory/Approaches:  Choose one theory/approach from the class. Define/describe the theory/approach. **Bold or highlight

the name and definition of the theory/approach so that I can identify it clearly.** Then apply the theory/approach to the film. You must use at least one example from the film (a scene, a relationship, a characterization) to show how the theory/approach is used in the film.

2)      Concepts:  Choose three concepts (words, terms, or ideas pertinent to death, dying and/or bereavement) from your book or class materials. An example of a word/concept from this class is death meanings (you do not have to use these words, but you can).

**Bold or highlight the name and definition of each word/concept so that I can identify it clearly.**   Follow this progression for each word/concept:

1.            Define the term in full.

2.            Apply the word/term to the movie. Use at least one example from the film (a scene, a relationship, a characterization) to show how the word/term is used in the film.

3)       Analysis and Evaluation:  In this section, you will analyze how the movie depicts death, dying and/or bereavement.  Make sure to explain and support your ideas with specific examples. Some questions you might want to consider:

1.            Did this movie affect your understanding of the perspectives of death, dying and bereavement?  In other words, what did you learn from this movie about how death, dying and bereavement is perceived (cognitive, behavioral and emotional perspectives)?

2.            What are the strengths and weaknesses of the movie in depicting death, dying and bereavement?

*Conclusion:?

Briefly conclude the analysis by pulling your thoughts together. You may want to discuss how this movie relates to your readings/psychology of death, dying and bereavement.??
