What is Policy Advocacy?

Policy advocacy is the action of influencing the decision-makers and stakeholders to create, revise, and bring out policies that are conducive to public health, equitable participation in the delivery of healthcare services, and competitive healthcare outcomes (Chiu, et al., 2021. It is a process of participation with legislators, government agencies, professional organizations, and community groups in order to guarantee the provision of healthcare policies based on evidence-based approaches, ethical considerations, and the populace at large.

What Are the Opportunities for Policy Advocacy at Various Levels?

Locally, nurses can advocate for policies at the local level, for instance, within institutions, i.e., hospital protocols for patient safety or infection control practices. At the state level, nurses can attend legislative sessions to affect laws on the scope of practice, nurse staffing ratios, and telehealth regulations. For example, they could push for Medicaid expansion or better GMH services. On the national level, nurses can join the American Nurses Association (ANA) to encourage Congress to opt for federal nursing education funding and prevention of workplace violence (Nickitas,.et al., 2024). At the global level, nurses can engage with WHO and other international bodies to promote health equity on a global level, for example, disaster response or pandemic preparedness.

 Nurses work as liaisons between patients, communities, and decision-makers, educate policymakers, and help to inform them as to how their proposed legislation will affect patient care and nursing practice. Participation in professional and coalition associations allows nurses to increase their power and multiply action (Chiu,et al., 2021)..

What Makes Nurses Effective Health Advocates for Policies and Revisions?

Nurses’ clinical expertise enables them to provide credible insider information on policy discussions. Because of this, they are patient-centered and able to interpret policies’ impact on patients and, out of this context, make sense of them. Nurses’ ethical commitment to justice, beneficence, and nonmaleficence informs their advocacy for equitable outcomes.

I would advocate for mandatory nurse-to-patient ratios in acute care settings, which I am passionate about. This will greatly help address the issue of nurse burnout and patient errors and complications. To advocate for this policy, I would reach out to all nursing associations, labor unions, hospital administrators, and others who would benefit from either the policy or the implications of employing this. I would provide evidence, data on the correlation of low nurse to patient ratios and increased mortality rates and readmissions, and education of policymakers.

Who Are the Stakeholders and Vulnerable Populations Affected by This Policy?

The primary stakeholders include nurses, patients, and families who benefit from improved care quality. Hospitals, insurance companies, and regulatory agencies that need to ensure compliance are secondary stakeholders. Advocacy organizations like the National Nurses United (NNU) and the American Nurses Association (ANA) greatly contribute significantly to promoting this policy (Scott, & Scott. 2021). Affected by the policy are such vulnerable groups as intensive care unit patients, who need more intense observation, and low-income communities, where there is generally a shortage of nurses that leaves holes in the care.
