In your first post for Chapter 7s forum, read the three scenarios below and answer the accompanying questions:
Scenario 1: A child is counting a collection of shells and begins by touching each shell as the number is said. After eight, the child continues to count but faster so the counting is not in a matched relationship with the shells.
· What skill does the child lack?
· What techniques or activities would you use to help develop this skill?
· Why is a one-to-one correspondence necessary?
Scenario 2: You are a kindergarten teacher teaching math with hands-on materials. You have several parents who are pressuring you to give children traditional worksheets and practice dittos so the parents have firm “evidence” that math is being taught.
· How would you respond?
· What plans would you make so that this issue doesn’t come up again?
Scenario 3: You are setting up your four-year old classroom a few weeks before the school year begins. Traditionally, your classrooms has been well stocked with learning materials purchased from Kaplan, Discount School Supply, or other educational companies.
Your center director has decided that all plastic materials must be removed from the classroom and that only natural materials may be used. You must find or purchase materials to replace the plastic learning materials.
· Where will you search for natural, loose parts, materials to add to the learning environment. Consider thrift stores, donation possibilities, and other creative ideas. Create a list of possible sources for these type of materials.
· For the math center in your classroom, create a comprehensive list of natural, loose parts, materials that you will add.
· For the dramatic play center, create a comprehensive list of natural, loose parts, materials that you will add.

Step 2: Create your classroom (or school) policy on superhero play.
