As the project manager, you must do the following:

  • Develop a list of 10 questions that will be asked of the executive director of research and development and the executive director of sales in a joint interview.
  • Provide the CEO with your strategy for dealing with this conflict between the two executive directors. In doing so, you are to address the following:
    • Which communication techniques will you rely on to resolve potential disputes between these two directors?
    • How will you plan this critical meeting between yourself and the department heads? What will be the agenda for the meeting? Provide an outline.
    • In executing and providing closure for the joint, voluntary, and crucially important participation of these two executive directors, which specific goals will you attempt to gain joint agreement upon?
    • How will you measure whether and/or the degree to which these goals have been reached?

A basic checklist for solutions is as follows:

  • Identify and address the main issue.
  • Provide real-life solutions (more than just theoretical considerations).
  • Address the criteria and measurements for success for this project.
  • Use proper APA formatting and citation.
  • Provide solutions that display critical and innovative thinking.

When writing questions to understand a conflict, you want to:

Focus on the information needs of leaders as well as you as you understand the conflict.

Identify what data and information are needed to collect for this purpose.

Identify the major categories of information that you need to collect (such as goals, work, and so forth).

List subcategories of information under major categories.

Remember when you are writing questions:

Write questions clearly and concisely.

Start with least sensitive or non-threatening questions.

Write questions by thinking about the people you will be interviewing or target population.

Avoid double negatives. Avoid double-barreled questions. Example: Are you satisfied with the place and time of the project? Write open ended questions

Open-Ended Questions – are questions in which the choice of responses are not specified and respondents must generate their own responses.

Can only be answered with a long description. The response allows the project manager to understand and apply the response to the conflict resolution.

 

Open questions have the following characteristics:

·       They ask the respondent to think and reflect.

·       They will give you opinions and feelings.

·       They hand control of the conversation to therespondent.

 

Use to:

·        Follow-on from closed questions

·        Find out more about a person, their wants, needs, problems, and so forth.

·        Get the managers to realize the extend of their problems and to come to an agreement.

·        Get the managers   to feel good about you by asking after their health or otherwise demonstrating human concern about them.

 

 

Open questions begin with such as: what, why, how, describe.

 

Can be answered in a few words or with a “yes” or “no”

 

Closed questions have the following characteristics:

·       They give you facts. 

·       They are easy to answer.

·       They are quick to answer.

·       They keep control of the conversation with thequestioner.

 

Use to:

 

·        Open conversations

·        Test your understanding

·        Determine frame of mind of each manager (“Are you unhappy with the current recruiter?”)

·        Close a conversation or get agreement (“Will you follow this agreement?”) from the manager(s)

 

Closed questions start with: do, would, are, will, if.
