1. Based on the reading, what are some of the greatest barriers preventing our schools from meeting the educational goals for EL students today? What recommendations are offered in the readings that address these barriers? Who do you see as potential change agents for implementing these recommendations? 2. Explore Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 from the "English Language Teaching" resource. Why was the law an important milestone in English education for non-English speaking students? Research and discuss specific changes it prompted in educational practice. How does this provision continue to influence our educational system and society today? Research and discuss any contemporary issues or challenges related to its implementation. 

3. What accounts for the disproportionately high representation of ELs in ESS/special education and disproportionately low representation in gifted and talented programs? Support your response with at least one scholarly resource. What can a teacher do to help identify gifted and talented students within the EL population? What are some ways you can help develop the gifts and talents of ELs in your classroom?

4. Who are long-term English learners (LTEL), recently arrived English learners (RAEL), and students with interrupted formal education (SIFE)? What are some factors that influence their English language acquisition? How do the EL special populations of refugee, migrant, immigrant, and Native American, relate to LTEL, RAEL, and SIFE?

5. If content area standards are provided for every grade level, why are English language proficiency standards necessary? Research and explore English language proficiency/development standards for a state other than Arizona (e.g., WIDA standards). What similarities do you see between those standards and Arizona's ELP standards? Based on the comparison, what are the most important aspects of English language proficiency standards?

6. Which two language acquisition/learning theories (behaviorist, nativist, social interactionist, cognitive, etc.) best reflect your teaching style or the approach to teaching that you prefer? In what ways would each of these theories drive your teaching practice, as applied to ELs? How can these two theories be used simultaneously to enhance learning?
