Video Discussion: Video Presentation: Cultural Immersion Experience Assignment Instructions
This discussion allows you to consider multicultural trends found in a particular diverse cultural group of the United States and to share this experience with other students in the course. Through the actual experience of what it is like to be immersed in a different culture, greater insight will occur into the role of the counselor in developing cultural self-awareness, understanding the role of community, cultural, and family systems, the promotion of social justice and advocacy, and the importance of eliminating biases.
Based on your Cultural Immersion experiences, you will develop a video presentation (see below for instructions) to share with your classmates. The video presentation should address the following elements:
· The four key elements (bullet points) learned from research.
· Historical/current oppression of chosen population.
· Summary of two events and three (3) key things that were learned.
· Summary of individual/couple interview information using question prompts from interview portion of immersion experience.
· Summary of experience using “Summary Section” prompts.
· A discussion of specific and practical application to counseling.
The presentation parameters should include the following elements:
· A professional PowerPoint (PPT) that is well organized and appealing with appropriate pictures. Word count should be limited in the PPT and should only include prompts to be covered by you during video recording of the presentation. The slides need to include citations of scholarly references.
· A video of you presenting your findings along with their PPT information. This can be completed by using Kaltura Capture or video-embedded PPT exported as MP4 and uploaded to Kaltura. See instructions for Kaltura in the assignment module and course announcements. Please reach out to LU IT for technical support.
· Video presentation should last between 15-20 minutes.
· The PPT presentation should be 10+ slides long (not counting the title slide or the reference page slide).
You will view and submit a written reply to one (1) other student’s video thread and comment on the presentation sharing a reflective summary of what was viewed. Include in your reply what two (2) elements you were previously unaware of regarding the population and its significance for you as a future clinician. The written reply must be 200-300 words.
NOTE: When viewing your classmates’ video threads, ensure that you view videos wherein there are no replies, as much as possible. If you happen to see a video thread wherein there are two replies from other students, then you must select another video thread.
