08 Aug Analyzing a production or adaptation of Othello(Shakespeare).
This written assignment involves analyzing a production or adaptation of Othello. You will analyze the artistic and interpretive choices made by the director or choreographer, and you will evaluate the results of those choices: what is gained, and what is lost, as we move from one art form, language, national tradition, and/or time period to another?
Omkara was directed by Vishal Bhardwaj in 2006. It is a Bollywood (Indian Hollywood) film based on Othello. The film blends elements of the American Western with Indian forms. For this written assignment, please view the selected clips and consider what scenes from Othello they adapt, and to what purpose. (You may also watch the full film if you so desire.) What kinds of changes has Bhardwaj made, and why? What difference does the transition from theatre to film make? What about the transition from England to India? Choose 2-3 clips for your analysis.Your paper should end with an evaluative conclusion: how, in the end, do you feel about Bhardwaj’s film? What new ideas, emotions, themes, or images does he discover in Shakespeare? Are there elements that you think get sacrificed or downplayed?Your essay should quote Shakespeare in every body paragraph, commenting on elements of Shakespeare’s language and imagery and comparing the text to the film. You should also read the preface to the screenplay by the director and quote it at least oncein your essay.
Your short essay should begin with an introduction that shares some basic information about the adaptation you’ve chosen and suggests some themes and questions that you plan to address in your analysis. Avoid large generalizations and too much plot summary; focus on matter at hand.
After your introduction, your short essay should quote Shakespeare in every body paragraph, commenting on elements of Shakespeare’s language and imagery and comparing the text to 2-3 clips from the production or adaptation. Make sure to review Lupton’s powerpoint on citing drama. Your commentary should reflect knowledge of the play from course lectures. Include topic sentences in each paragraph to organize your points (the first sentence that provides an overview of the paragraph).
Your paper should end with an evaluative conclusion: how, in the end, do you feel about the production you’ve analyzed? What new ideas, emotions, themes, or images does the director, composer, or choreographer discover in Shakespeare? Are there elements that you think get sacrificed or downplayed.
Length: 500-750 words (2 pages). This is a short response highlighting your analysis skills.
